This type of robot, is available in all sizes and can be pneumatic powered, fixed stroke, or servo driven and thus, freely programmable.
Each axis is generally a straight line module, thus a Cartesian's - Y-Z motion is a normal layout.

The big advantage, of this robot, is that the work envelope, can be made as large as is required, to suit a particular application.

For use in material handling applications, or for press feeding, they can make a lot of sense.

At the other end of the size spectrum, they can be on the smaller side and used for small part, automated assembly operations.

Several manufacturers offer axis modules, that can be bolted together, in a wide variety of configurations. This is the recommended method of construction. All automation is a high risk venture, and we must do everything possible, to minimize this risk and make the application a solid success.
